Essential Fire Safety Signage

With fire posing deadly risks and devastating consequences, it is essential that fire safety is top of your agenda when considering health & safety signage for your business. Ensuring that you are prepared for the eventuality of a fire help can you avoid employee and visitor injury, protect against costly damages and recently increased health & safety breach fines.

Where do I start…?

If you’re responsible for the fire safety in your workplace, then the first step is to conduct a fire risk assessment of the premises. This will allow you to:

  • Identify risks and hazards
  • Control for identified risks by implementing appropriate fire safety measures
  • Make plans for an emergency
  • Inform staff of fire safety procedures
  • The Health and Safety (Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 act states that safety signage should be used where there is a significant risk to health and safety where other methods cannot control the risk. Signs must conform to BS ISO 7010 standard to ensure consistency.Work environments come in all shapes and sizes so fire safety requirements will differ, however we have put together a recommendation of some of the essential fire safety signs you should be displaying around your business:

What are the 5 different categories of fire signage?

Fire Exit Signage

Fire Exit Sign

If your building has a simple layout and it is clear and obvious where the exit is e.g a door at the front of a small shop – then fire exit signage is not a requirement.

However for bigger or more complex buildings signage is essential. You should first determine your primary exit route.

This should be the shortest and quickest route out of a building from any given location – for these routes use the Exit signage.

You also need to plan a secondary escape route in case a fire makes the primary route impassable. For this route and for all other routes out of a building use the Fire Exit Signage:

  • If in any doubt about which signs to use – use the Fire Exit Signage throughout the entire building
  • From any position within a building an escape sign should be visible
  • Once you have passed the first sign the next sign on the route should be clearly visible
  • You will need further signage at every change of direction
  • Final exit signs must be above all final exit doors
  • Signs must not be conflicting – e.g. two arrow up back to back sign could cause confusion or people from opposite directions running in to each other

Your fire exit signage is part of the safe condition category, these signs are identified by white text on a green background and gives information on escape routes or first aid. Fire Door Signage

Fire doors are crucial in slowing the spread of fire. When closed, they act as a barrier to help prevent the fire from spreading and when open they allow as a means of escape.

All fire doors should be marked with the appropriate sign dependent on the type of exit. The following signage is mandatory (white text on blue background) which indicates a course of action must be taken. Where appropriate the sign should be displayed on both sides of the door.

  • Fire Door Keep Shut – use for fire doors that need to be closed when not in use
  • Fire Door Keep Locked Shut – use for fire doors that must be kept locked when not in use
  • Automatic Fire Door Keep Clear – use for doors that are held open by an automatic mechanism

Fire Action Notice

The purpose of a fire action notice is to inform employees or visitors of what action to take in the event of a fire. These signs can come with spaces to fill in details and gives information such as:

  • Phone number to call the fire brigade
  • Address of building
  • How to exit the building
  • Assembly point information
  • Specific instructions regarding the building

There are a range of different fire action notices – such as notices for buildings with lifts, for residential care homes, for people with mobility issues etc. Ensure you choose the correct sign for your business and the people who use it/have access to. It is a good idea to position your fir action notice next to your fire alarm call point. This means that whoever is activating the alarm has details on what to do and where to go on sounding the alarm.

Your emergency exit routes need to lead as directly as possible to a safe area. This should be far enough away from the building so that emergency services are able to avoid interference and so potential debris from the fire is avoided.

When determining your fire assembly point you must also ensure this is suitable for vulnerable people when exiting a building such as elderly people or people with mobility issues.

Fire Safety Equipment:

It is crucial that staff and visitors are aware of the location of fire safety equipment and how to use it in the event of a fire. Current legislation states that all fire safety equipment which requires manual handing must be easy to locate and have clear signage. Fire safety equipment signs are red with white text to allow for easy identification

– Fire Extinguishers

It is recommended to display signage giving details on fire extinguishers types (water, Co2, Hydrospray, powder, wet chemical & AFF foam) so that people can quickly choose the chose the correct extinguisher in an emergency depending on the type of fire.

The majority of fires can be successfully tackled in the first few minutes with the correct extinguisher; therefore it is vital that staff are aware of the location and detail of extinguishers. Signage, with symbols to accompany instructions, should be displayed next to every extinguisher location.

It is mandatory to display a fire alarm call point sign next to all fire alarm points. A fire alarm call point enables people to quickly raise the alarm in the event of an emergency or fire.

UK fire alarm regulations (BS 5839) recommend fire alarm systems to be inspected at least every 6 months and tested weekly to help prevent false alarms and alert occupants in the event of a fire.

– Other fire safety equipment signage

If you have other fire safety equipment on your premises then you should also include signage to highlight the location. This includes but is not limited to:

This Friday we start our epic Three Peaks Challenge! This involves climbing the 3 highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours. We are raising money for our partner agency RoSPA’s  (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Brighter Beginnings campaign. This was launched as part of their centenary celebration after discovering that a third of parents felt they didn’t have enough information to protect their children . The appeal has already seen the launch of:

  •           A freephone helpline –  providing 24 hour support on the phone and over email

As accidents continue to be the biggest killer of children and young people under 19 the work the carry out  is invaluable.

The challenge begins in Scotland on Friday 23rd with our ascent up Ben Nevis at 4pm. The peak is the highest in the UK at 4, 411.18ft! We then descend at pace before cramming back into our mini bus and head south to England.

Next up is Scafell Pike, we start our ascent in darkness at the cringingly early time of 2.30am on Saturday! This mountain is the smallest but is the most technical in parts which will test our head torch navigation skills to the max! We then descend and make our way to Wales.

Finishing up with our 3rd and final Mountain, Snowdon, we aim to have completed the descent by 3pm no doubt exhausted!

How do photoluminescent signs work?

Photoluminescence occurs when a material absorbs photons (light energy) and then emits them back when the light source is removed i.e. in the dark, creating a noticeable lighting effect. Photoluminescent safety signs are designed to absorb photons from ambient light and then re-emit them in darkened conditions.

With a internal lifespan of up to 25 years they can also save money by not using electricity. Being maintenance free there is no need for costly regular testing regimes associated with ensuring the correct functionality of electrical signs. **April Fools** Article 50 Triggers New Imperial Signs

Have you seen our article anywhere? Apologies if we fooled you – we couldn’t resist!

This week Theresa May officially started the Brexit process with the triggering of Article 50.  As expected, many changes to laws and legislation established by the EU will begin to take place across Britain.  These changes will include all road signs which feature metric measurements.  Here at Stocksigns we have been busy designing the new signs in preparation for Britain’s leave.

In 1976, three years after Britain joined the European Economic Community (EEC), Stocksigns produced our first metric signs for use in schools, businesses and on public highways.  This was because the EEC had begun theGood vehicle weight restriction process of metrication and was phasing out traditional, imperial measurements.

When Britain has completely left the EU the metric system will no longer be mandatory.  In keeping with the changes, metric road signs will also be converted to imperial.

New imperial signs will be introduced gradually across the country and will be implemented by local councils, health and safety bodies and educational facilities.  As well as large signs in public places, such as wayfinding notices and motorways, the conversions will take place in sports centres, schools and nurseries.  For example, swimming pools which are currently measured at 25 metres or 50 metres will, in the future, be displayed as 82 feet 3 inches and 164 feet 4 inches.

The importance of Health & Safety signage to your business

The Health and Safety  (Safety Signs and Signals Regulations) act then adopted these changes in 1996 which required employers to display safety signs to highlight risks that cannot be controlled or avoided.

The Safety Signs and Signals Regulations has had a huge impact in keeping workers and members of the public safe.  Since its introduction there has been a 50% reduction in the number of fatal injuries.

Understanding Fire Signage

Choosing your fire signage can be a daunting task. What exactly do you need? Where do you have to install them? Will you be compliant with BS EN ISO 7010? What happens if you get it wrong?

In the UK between 2010 and 2014, there were 97,500 fires in commercial premises, with 1,881 fatalities over the same period. It is essential to have clearly marked routes to exits and fire fighting equipment as this will help to limit the risk of loss of life.

Where do you place signs on the escape route?

The first step to determining your escape route is to find your primary escape route. This should be the shortest and quickest route out of the building from any given location. It is also essential to plan a secondary escape route, in the event of a fire makes the primary route impassable.

Determining the signage for your fire escape route is confusing, however, it can be simplified with a few simple guidelines;

  • Within your building, an escape sign should always be visible
  • Once past the first fire escape sign, the next escape sign along the route must be clearly seen
  • Further signage is required at every change of direction along the escape route
  • A fire exit sign must be above all final fire exit doors
  • Ensure there are no conflicting signs along the route e.g. 2 arrow up signs back to back.

Fire Exit signs and where to use them?

Fire exit signs with left and right arrows are self-explanatory. If you see an arrow pointing to the left, what that is essentially saying is that you should “Progress to the left”. If you see an arrow pointing to the right, it is telling you that you should “Progress to the right”.

Where some of the confusion starts to come in around fire safety signs, is with the up and the down arrow.

Fire Exit Arrow Up is to be used when you have to continue along your route, towards another fire exit sign. It can also be used for final exits. The only exception to this is if there is a step-down or ramp immediately outside.

Fire Exit Arrow Down signs are to be used when you have to continue along your route, towards another fire exit sign. If after an exit sign there is a staircase leading down immediately after your sign, then a down arrow is required.

What size sign do I need?

One of the most important things to consider when ordering a fire exit sign is the size. The size that you need is based on the maximum distance that the size needs to be viewed from.

Below is a guide to the sizes that you will need based on the distance in meters.

  • 300mm x 100mm KD – Viewing distance up to 10 meters
  • 450mm x 150mm NF – Viewing distance up to 15 meters
  • 600mm x 200mm RG – Viewing distance up to 20 meters
  • 1200mm x 400mm – Viewing distance up to 40 meters
  • For illuminated signs the viewing distance doubles

When does photoluminescent help?

Photoluminescent signs provide additional reliability. In the event of a power failure, they offer a constant source of illumination and invaluable guidance.

1) Directions
You need to consider wayfinding in your car park under all elements including rain and darkness. Often directions on the ground can easily be missed under these circumstances as drivers have so much to concentrate on. Therefore it is important to include directional and informative signage at the height for drivers to easily see where they need to be going.

2) Disabled / parent and child bays

Vinyl wrapped buildings and walls

Sometimes a new or temporary building can look our of place in its surroundings, whether it is a bright colour, looks unappealing or just does not simply fit in with the environment.

An effective solution to this aesthetic problem is to camouflage your building in a vinyl wrap of your chosen design to make it fit in more with the environment. For example, a prefab building in the middle of a grassy retreat surrounded by woods, may look messy against the environment. However, with a bit of design and installation this building can be transformed into a log cabin.

For example, on a recent holiday, our sales and marketing director came across this building, which on closer inspection was found to be vinyl wrapped. The design tricks the eye and allows the building to become part of the environment.

Takeaways on the rise – more to be done on allergen food labelling

In the week that new statistics showed that Londoners are eating more takeaways than ever before, allergy sufferers are urging restaurants and takeaway outlets to do more to show if any allergens are present in their food.

Top chefs have signed up to a new app which shows allergy sufferers where they can eat safely, thought up when the creator’s husband suffered a severe allergic reaction in a Greek restaurant to sesame seeds. The app, Kafoodle Kitchen, information shares between restaurants and the customer with ingredients being uploaded to the cloud based app.

Since new allergen labelling legislation was introduced in December 2014, restaurants, takeaways and other food preparation outlets are required to clearly display ingredients and whether any allergens are present in their food.

Last month it was reported that two-thirds of UK takeaways weren’t up to regulation when it came to displaying information on the top 14 allergens present in food. And with the takeaway industry booming – the UK spends £12 million a week on Domino’s pizza alone – information on allergens is of paramount importance.

Two-thirds of UK takeaways breaking the law on food allergen labelling

More than 66% of UK takeaways are breaking the law by failing to label any potential allergens that the food they serve contains.

An investigation by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) found that these restaurants neglected to provide the legally-required food allergy information in the 14 major allergens in their food, with fried chicken, pizza, Chinese and fish and chip shops being the worst offenders.

Legislation, which came into effect at the end of 2014, states that all food providers have to now display clearly whether their food contain any of the 14 major allergens, such as nuts, fish and eggs.

As part of its campaign, the RSPH is calling for allergy competency awards to be displayed alongside food hygiene ratings, where good practice is conducted. Additionally, it also wants businesses to ensure their staff are properly trained to manage the risks from allergens.

The evolution of the Health & Safety poster over 80 years

Visitors to the RoSPA stand at the Safety & Health Expo this week would have been able to preview a collection of British safety posters in a new publication being released next month.

Safety First, by Dr Paul Rennie from Central St Martins College of Art and Design, features vintage RoSPA posters from between the 1930s and 1970s aiming to provide awareness about occupational, road, leisure and home safety.

Scores of this vintage artwork was discovered when a warehouse was being cleared in Birmingham earlier in the year, many of them featuring Tufty the Squirrel, and highlighting the safety concerns of previous generations.

As the preferred supplier of current safety and awareness posters for RoSPA, all here at Stocksigns are particularly intrigued to see the evolution of these posters from the hand drawn graphics during the war to the post-war images driving awareness on the road and in the workplace.

Although the overall message has not changed in many of the posters, changes in legislation have to be reflected in design and wording, meaning that current posters still have the same scope and longevity when conveying safety awareness.

The vape debate

The 2007 No smoking legislation brought about big change for businesses, however this legislation doesn’t cover e-cigarettes/vaping. As there is currently no legal requirement to ban or restrict the use of e-cigarette smoking, businesses are taking their own stance on whether to allow employees and customers to use e-cigarettes in the workplace or while out socialising. With new concerns from health officials regarding the dangers of e-cigarettes the debate  has intensified.e-cigarette

Southern Rail have introduced a network wide ban to prevent customers smoking
e- cigarettes on their trains or stations. Southern Rail’s ban follows decisions by Govia Thameslink Railway, Transport for London, Chiltern Railways, ScotRail, South West Trains and East Midlands Trains and MPs have been banned from using them in their offices at Westminster.

The Public Health Bill proposed by the Welsh government planned to make it illegal to use electronic cigarettes in the workplace, pubs, clubs and any other public enclosed areas in order to dissuade users in the same way as the ban on tobacco. However the proposal collapsed due to a lack of support and the ban will be dropped from the future public health bill legislation.

Malta, Belgium and Spain all have similar laws in place with regards to e-cigarettes but the rest of the UK currently have no plans to introduce any bans. However, advertising has been targeted with investigations in to TV adverts being carried out and a total ban on any advertisement on social media.

Food Information Regulations Allergen Labelling

With effect from 13th December 2014, The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in conjunction with DEFRA  introduced new allergen labelling laws, these are the Food Information Regulations EU1169/2011 (FIR Regs). These regulations affect all food service organisations, no matter what their size.

The new food law states that all food service providers serving unpackaged  food or even food that is packaged on site for immediate consumption ( e.g. sandwiches) will have to provide details of any menu items that contain any of the top 14 allergens. Your local Environmental Health Officers will enforce the new regulations and non-compliance will result in very large fines.The new law states:

  • You can no longer state that you don’t know if an allergen is present
  • You can no longer state that all foods ‘could’ contain allergens (I.e. no more this  product ‘may’ contain nuts)
  • Oral statements have to be backed up in writing if requested

Have you done enough? Top Tips For The Food Information Regulations

The FSA has made clear the importance of the new Food Information Regulations and they have now become law but are you really doing enough to help your customers? In recent research carried out in only 8% of food establishments surveyed had the information obviously displayed to the customer. Generally there was little or no instructional guidance as to what the customer should do if concerned about allergens. In a truly customer  centered organisation you should be ensuring their safety and well being and total experience of your service not just paying lip service to this justifiably important law. With 6–8 % of children having a proven food allergy in the UK (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2011), this is not an issue that is likely to go away.

Here are our top tips to make sure you are doing enough for the Food Information Allergen Labelling

  • Make sure your staff are all fully trained and confident about their knowledge
  • Make sure you are compliant, read and re-read the regulations
  • Talk to your suppliers, how can they help you, ask for written assurances on their products
  • By all means have the information available on your website but make it accessible in store too
  • Don’t just add to the small print at the bottom of your menus. Make sure it is clear what action your customers should take.

How many signs does your building need?

We often get asked by our customers ‘How do I know how many signs my building needs?’Although there is no hard and fast answer to this, customers must make sure that their building signage is compliant with current the current health and safety legislation.

The number of signs required by a business is dependent on certain factors such as the size of the building, the use of the building and the number of employees and visitors If your building is a commercial premise then you are legally required to undertake a fire risk assessment to allow you to identify any hazards or risks in the building. You can undertake the assessment yourself (if you have expertise or the time to investigate the legal requirements) or you can appoint a fire safety officer. This assessment will allow you to identify fire hazards, identify people who are at risk, devise an emergency plan and evaluate and reduce risks. The fire risk assessment will help you in determining how many signs you require for your building.

 

How big is the building?

This may be an obvious factor, the larger the building the more signs may be required. How many entrance and exit points does your building have? This will determine how many fire exit signs will be required for example there needs to be a fire exit sign above every doorway where there is more than one exit point. There also needs to be a fire door sign for every fire door in the building.

How complicated is the internal design of the building? This will determine if you require wayfinding signage to help employees and visitors navigate their way around your building.

How is the building used?

The use of your building will also have an impact on the type of signage you require. Certain businesses will have more hazards associated with them for example in a factory environment. There is likely to be heavy machinery which will require hazard signs to highlight risks such as noise and fast moving parts. You will also require mandatory signs to advise what kind of personal protective equipment (PPE) is to be worn such as eye protection.

Is your building open to the general public? If so increased safety signage may be required to highlight risk and dangers to visitors. Increased way-finding signage may be required to safely and efficiently guide visitor traffic through the building.

Who will use the building?

You must also consider the needs of employees and visitors who enter your building. As part of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) there must now be reasonable adjustments to buildings to assist disabled persons. This will range from braille and tactile signage to disabled refuge points. Age is another consideration. Schools will need age appropriate and easy to understand signage, we supply primary and secondary school signs in a range of colours.  Likewise consideration must be given to older generations and people suffering from dementia. So how can you make sure you have the appropriate number of signs?

There are a number of methods you can use to ensure your building has the correct signage. Make sure you include signage in all aspects of your company risk assessments. Wherever a risk has been identified, ask yourself if a sign could help reduce risk, or significantly raise awareness of that risk.

Using building plans and drawings of your premises can provide a systematic method of determining the signage you require; similarly an audit of all the possible routes of access and working spaces can identify problem areas. The Top 10 Safety Signs

Every non domestic premise in the UK is governed by safety legislation and as such will have a need for safety signs. Safety signage is a cost effective and efficient way to warn and educate people to the particular risks associated with a building. While there are some signs, such as fire signs, which will be common to all buildings, there are many others which will only be relevant in certain situations. The way to determine the signs needed should be by way of a full risk assessment and perhaps a sign site survey.

Below we have put together our top 10 list of the typical signs likely to be found in businesses and public buildings, but please bear in mind that every building has different requirements and signage should be judged on individual risk assessments.

These are used to indicate emergency routes and emergency escapes. Used to mark safe means of escape.

6. No Smoking Signs

July 2007 saw a total smoking ban in all enclosed public places, work places and certain vehicles in the UK. The smoke free legislation means it is an offence not to display the appropriate No Smoking Signs, resulting in fines up to £1000.

These need to be used wherever a slippery area is not cordoned off. Most premises will have routine cleaning operations which may leave areas vulnerable. Lightweight stands holding double-sided signs are readily available.
