The Health & Safety Signs

(Safety Signs and Signals Regulations) 1996

Safety Sign Legislation

BSi committees involved in the development of new sign standards have over recent years been working on revisions of BS 5378 and BS5499 with the objective of creating a complete new set of parts still using BS5499 as the standard reference number. Some of these parts have now been replaced with ISO 7010.

BS5499 - 4:2000

Graphical symbols and signs – safety signs, including fire safety signs Part 4: Code of practice for escape route signing.

BS5499 – 5:2002

Graphical symbols and signs – Safety signs, including fire safety signs Part 5: Signs with specific safety meanings.

You are required to provide and maintain safety signs wherever risks to health and safety have not been avoided by other means. To do this you need to have fulfilled your obligation to undertake a risk assessment under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (Management Regulations).

 

Know your Symbols & Signs

In addition you are required to train staff in the meaning of safety signs, Stocksigns offers pictorial symbol signs and pocket guides as training aids.

There are a number of signs with graphical symbols in use that represent the same safety message. It is the policy of Stocksigns where possible to use designs from British Standards signs, which in many cases incorporate the best technical information from ISO (International Standards Organisation)

Prohibition Signs
