If you’ve ever wondered who keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes at Stocksigns and Messagemaker, look no further than our Operations Manager, Dave Cload. From logistics to people, processes to problem-solving, Dave is the steady hand (and occasionally the logistical wizard) ensuring our customers receive a seamless experience every single time.

Life as Operations Manager 

In short: a lot.
Dave’s role is to make sure the business runs efficiently, reliably, and profitably day in, day out. He’s the person who takes strategy and turns it into action overseeing systems, people, and processes to ensure everything works in harmony.

A typical day for Dave? There’s no such thing.
This morning you might find him coordinating overseas logistical supplies. This afternoon he’ll be meeting with contractors to oversee building works. Tomorrow, he’s focused on his team with one-to-ones and catch-ups. He has a hand in everything from properties and machinery to production staff and suppliers and somehow manages to keep all the plates spinning.

Proud Moments

One of Dave’s proudest achievements is implementing 5S within the production team. While 5S may sound like a housekeeping initiative, Dave can tell you it’s far more than tidiness. It’s about building a culture.

By introducing this system, he helped streamline workflows, reduce waste, boost safety, and empower the team to take genuine ownership of their space. As a result of this a measurable improvement was made in efficiency and a happier, more engaged production team. That’s the kind of impact that lasts.

Career Journey

Dave’s career path has been anything but predictable and that’s what makes him such a well-rounded Operations Manager.

He started out in Event Management, spending nearly a decade organising events, logistics, and product launches in the financial sector. That’s where his top-tier organisational skills were forged.

Then he took a sharp left turn.
Dave trained in fabrication, welding, metalwork installation, and interpreting technical architectural drawings, giving him a practical engineering background that still informs his work today. Understanding how signs and bracketry work mechanically has become a huge asset to the business.

Proudest Achievement…

It might not be in his official job description, but Dave’s favourite challenge each year is organising our annual charity event for The Children’s Trust. From creating unique staff challenges to involving customers and suppliers, Dave brings people together for an incredible cause.
So far, his efforts have helped raise over £110,000 a phenomenal achievement and one he (and we!) are extremely proud of.

At the helm of Stocksigns is our Managing Director, Danny a people-focused leader with a passion for teamwork, growth, and a very solid love for tea. His role spans every corner of the business, and no two days ever look the same…

Life as Managing Director

Variety is the name of the game for Danny. His days can include anything from client meetings and sales calls to webinars, conferences, company-wide sessions, and 1:1 discussion with team members. He thrives on the pace and the opportunity to get stuck into every part of the business.

 

But what matters most to him?

The people.
Whether he’s supporting his teams, celebrating their achievements, or watching individuals grow in confidence and skills, Danny’s proudest accomplishments aren’t tied to one project  they’re tied to the culture and community he’s helped build.

And outside the office?

The highlight of the year is always the annual charity climb, where the whole team comes together for a challenge with purpose.

Danny’s career began in the most British way possible selling Tetley Tea.
He still loves the stuff and swears it “keeps the nation going.”

From those early days in sales, he worked his way into leadership, bringing with him a grounded, people-first approach that now shapes the culture at Stocksigns.

Danny calls the Stocksigns crew “real characters,” and wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s the personalities but more importantly, the shared values that make this such a great place to work.”

While many teams keep things moving on the surface, our Accounts team quietly keeps the financial foundations steady across the entire business.

From managing payroll and budgeting to reconciling bank accounts and overseeing property portfolios, they ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes with organisation, collaboration, and a brilliant sense of humour.

No two days look the same. The team juggle everything from reporting, forecasting, and financial analysis to managing ISO accreditations and handling property matters.

Whether they’re solving unexpected issues, keeping cash flow healthy, or supporting other departments, the Accounts team make sure the numbers always add up.

Meet Jana – Group Finance Manager

Jana oversees the entire Accounts team, managing everything from payroll and cash flow to budgeting, forecasting, and weekly reporting. Although she says there’s no “typical day,” she thrives on variety and leadership.

Two standouts:

  • Streamlining stock management
  • Successfully moving the business to a new payroll platform

Both required precision, planning, and patience all of which Jana brings in abundance.

What she finds most fulfilling

Her team! Jana says the best part of her job is managing her people and being incredibly proud of everything they achieve together.

She started as an accounts admin and worked her way up through credit control, purchase ledger, and financial controller roles, eventually becoming Group Finance Manager.

Meet the Team Page- Stocksigns Jana

Meet Gail – Accounts Administrator (British & Foreign Wharf Company Ltd)

Gail looks after the B&F properties and investments, as well as the company’s ISO accreditations. Her role spans everything from property management and invoicing rents to reconciling bank accounts and chasing payments and she handles it all with calm efficiency.

Projects she’s proud of

Gail’s standout achievement is securing triple certification for ISO Accreditation, a huge milestone that reflects her dedication and organisation.

What she finds most interesting

You might not expect drama in accounts, but Gail has stories including dealing with squatters in an empty London property. No two days are ever dull!

Career journey

Her career began after a Business Studies course, with her first role handling motor accident claims for an insurance company. Over time, she found her niche in accounts and property management, bringing a wealth of experience to Stocksigns.

As the festive season approaches and 2025 draws to a close, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on an incredible year. From celebrating our 70th Anniversary to climbing Monte Perdido (The Lost Mountain) and raising over £26,000 for The Children’s Trust.

This year we hit a big milestone! 70 Years of Signs, Success, and Surprises. From a small family business in 1955 to one of the UK’s leading signage manufacturers, Stocksigns has grown, evolved, and innovated every step of the way.

 

And what better way to celebrate 70 amazing years than with a summer party? The 70th birthday bash was nothing short of legendary: cupcakes stacked high, games to make everyone laugh, heartfelt speeches, and a photobooth capturing all the fun moments. It was a perfect mix of nostalgia, celebration, and pure Stocksigns spirit.

Supporting Mental Health on Site One Sign at a time…

In 2025, we launched a new range of mental health signage for construction sites, developed in partnership with The Lucy Rayner Foundation. This collaboration aims to raise awareness and provide support for mental health issues within the construction industry, which has one of the highest rates of suicide and mental health challenges among workers.

The signage range includes:

  • Mental Health First-Aider Signs: Directing workers to immediate support.
  • Resource Posters: Offering information on recognizing mental health issues and where to seek help.
  • Reminder Signs: Displaying messages like “It’s okay not to be okay” to reduce stigma and encourage open conversations.

We are also donating 10% of the proceeds from these signs to The Lucy Rayner Foundation to support their mental health initiatives. This initiative underscores the importance of mental well-being in high-risk industries and reflects a commitment to fostering a supportive and open environment for workers.

Environmental Range:

This year we also introduced a comprehensive Environmental Signage Range tailored for the construction industry, emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility on-site. This initiative aligns with the sector’s shift towards greener practices, aiming to reduce environmental impact and enhance site safety.

The Environmental Signage Range helps construction sites promote sustainability and protect the environment. It includes signs for waste segregation and recycling, energy conservation, water protection, and controlling air and noise pollution. Additionally, the range supports biodiversity and wildlife protection, marking sensitive areas and species, and provides warnings for invasive species and habitat safety, ensuring ecological responsibility is maintained across sites.

We also have spent a lot more time on site with our customers this year. The Morris & Spottiswood Tesco project demonstrates the importance of visiting sites to observe signage in use. Clear, consistent, and durable temporary construction signage was critical for safety, communication, and professional branding, especially during complex night works.

Visiting sites allows us to:

  • See our signs performing in real-world conditions.
  • Assess visibility, durability, and effectiveness first-hand.
  • Ensure branding and safety requirements are being met.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements or standardization for future projects.

A marathon and a mountain…

In July, we took fundraising to new heights—literally! Our team tackled a marathon and a mountain climb, all in support of Children’s Trust. This year’s we set our sights on an incredible challenge climbing the legendary “The Lost Mountain,” better known as Mount Perdido. Standing at an impressive 11,000 ft in the Pyrenees, this was no small adventure!

The journey began at the crack of dawn in Gatwick, followed by flights to Barcelona and a scenic drive through the Pyrenees to Torla-Ordesa. After settling into the hostel and gearing up, the team tackled the stunning Ordesa Valley, navigating waterfalls, dense forests, and the notoriously challenging vereda de las flores cliff section.

On summit day, conditions were tough, but ten determined climbers pushed to the top of the Pyrenees, rewarded with breathtaking views and the satisfaction of standing on the “roof” of the range. The climb ended with a well-earned celebration back at the base, marking an unforgettable adventure for an incredible cause.

We raised an incredible £26,653.57 for children with brain injuries and neurodisabilities.

We know the value of giving back…

Giving back is equally important. In 2025, our ESG efforts went even further. Our team got hands-on with gardening at The Children’s Trust helping them dewed their 24 acres of woodland and gardens, helped create and attend signage for the Lucy Rayner Gala Dinner, hosted lunch-and-learn sessions with Lucy Rayner Foundation, and even took part in Macmillan’s bake-off. These activities allow our staff to make a real difference in our community while fostering teamwork, creativity, and fun.

 

Wow, what a ride 2025 has been! This year has been full of innovation, growth, and a few rollercoaster moments but we wouldn’t have it any other way. And honestly… we can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store!

70 Years of Signs, Success, and Surprises – Happy Birthday Stocksigns!

This year, Stocksigns turns 70 and what a journey we’ve has been! From a small family business in 1955 to one of the UK’s leading signage manufacturers, Stocksigns has grown, evolved, and innovated every step of the way.

At the beginning…

It all started with the Bidwell brothers and their vision for quality signage under the name Action Industrial Products.

Back then, the world of signs was simple, but Stocksigns was already thinking ahead. By 1960, the company had introduced vinyl into its production, modernising its processes and expanding the types of signage it could offer. Six years later, in 1966, the company rebranded as Stocksigns Ltd, making its focus on specialist signage crystal clear.

The next few decades were full of milestones. In 1989, Stocksigns joined the British & Foreign Wharf Co. Ltd family and celebrated record annual sales a sign (pun intended) of the growth to come. By 1992, the company achieved ISO 9002 certification, cementing its commitment to quality and reliability that has carried it through the years.

The 2000s brought celebrations and expansion. 50 years of Stocksigns in 2005 called for a garden party to remember! And just a few years later, in 2008, Stocksigns acquired Brunel Signs, bringing in vitreous enamel signage the same type seen across the London Underground. Technology and innovation were clearly part of the company’s DNA.

Digital Printing era…

And the innovation didn’t stop there. By 2010, Stocksigns had embraced digital printing and invested in its first digital cutter, boosting precision and efficiency. A year later, the company acquired Messagemaker Displays, expanding into LED and programmable signage, proving that Stocksigns was ready for the digital age.

Not everything was about signs on walls, though. Stocksigns’ team has always loved a challenge literally! From taking on the 3 Peaks Challenge in 2017 to sleeping outdoors for the Sleep Easy event in 2019, staff have pushed themselves to raise money for causes like RoSPA and YMCA Surrey.

2020: The year no one predicted…

Then came 2020 a year nobody could have predicted. Stocksigns adapted swiftly, producing social distancing markers and hygiene signage to help businesses navigate the pandemic safely. The company’s commitment to excellence continued with Triple ISO Certification in 2021, and the launch of innovative products like the Fire Safety Wayfinding system in 2022.

Stocksigns isn’t just about signs!

And of course, Stocksigns is thinking about the future too. Solar panels, Impala Printer 4, Zund Cutter, and HP Latex Printers are just some of the ways the company is boosting efficiency, precision, and sustainability in 2023 and 2024.

But Stocksigns isn’t just about signs! It’s about people, fun, and community too. And what better way to celebrate 70 amazing years than with a summer party? No two days are ever the same in the Marketing department. One moment the team are crafting a new social media campaign, the next they’re analysing performance data, updating websites, or even planning events and charity initiatives. Daniella – Marketing & Graphics Manager

As the Marketing and Graphics Manager, Daniella leads the team of four creative minds who make it all happen. Her days are never the same and that’s exactly how she likes it.

Daniella’s especially proud of creating Stocksigns Construction, a project that brought together the “First Call Signs” brand into one cohesive range.

What she enjoys most

For her, it’s all about collaboration and fun: “I love that we get to work across so many areas of the business, and there’s always something new to get involved in.”

Career journey

After studying photography at university, Daniella took an unpaid internship at a local marketing agency, fell in love with the industry, and never looked back.

Kelly – Marketing Executive

Officially, Kelly manages digital campaigns and platforms for both Stocksigns and Messagemaker.

Unofficially? She’s also our Sustainability Communications champion and resident office Plant Parent.

Life in the role

Her days are fuelled by tea (a builder’s brew, of course) and filled with everything from content creation and email marketing to website updates and ESG research.

Projects she’s proud of

Her standout moment was keeping the marketing engine running solo in 2023 while Daniella was on maternity leave.

What she enjoys most

She admits it’s “a bit nerdy,” but she loves seeing the data after a campaign goes live and using it to make the next one even better.

Holly – Marketing Assistant

Holly brings creativity, energy, and passion to everything she does. From developing new product ranges to running events and managing campaigns, she’s always up for a challenge.

Holly’s particularly proud of completing her Marketing Apprenticeship and planning, creating and managing the Mental Health Signage Campaign from start to finish. As well as building her personal brand on LinkedIn and being nominated as one of the top 100 marketing influencers by Technology for Marketing.

What she enjoys most

The creativity that marketing has to offer! Whether it’s creating a social media post, a new landing page or even a magazine ad. Holly enjoys it all!

Career Journey

Holly marketing career started as an apprentice at Stocksigns to learn all things marketing. She has always been a creative person as she has always been into performing arts and dancing.

Our Graphics team are the creative force behind Stocksigns. They take ideas, technical requirements, and customer briefs, and turn them into artwork that’s not only visually striking but also ready for production. From catalogues to safety signs, they make sure every design is clear, compliant, and built to do its job.

Life in Graphics

A typical day for the team involves creating artwork for a wide range of signage needs and setting them up for production. They work closely with other departments to make sure designs flow seamlessly through to manufacturing. It’s detailed work that requires creativity, precision, and collaboration and it’s where the visuals of every Stocksigns product begin.

Meet Hayley

After starting her own design business in 2017, Hayley wanted to explore new areas of design. That led her into the signage world, and she hasn’t looked back.

Hayley joined Stocksigns in 2019, bringing with her a background in illustration and design. She now spends her days creating artwork across a variety of signage requirements and setting them up for production.

Projects she’s proud of

One of her biggest achievements was the complete remake of the entire Stocksigns catalogue. It was a huge modernisation project that took months to complete, but the result was worth every bit of effort.

What she enjoys most

For Hayley, the best part of the job is spotting signs she’s worked on out in the real world serving their purpose and keeping people safe.

  • Would love to illustrate children’s books one day
  • Loves watching K-Dramas while making miniatures
  • Adores all things South Korea: K-Pop, food, language (which she’s learning!), and culture

After studying graphic design, Priya gained experience across design and print companies before joining Stocksigns, where she now applies her skills to the signage industry.

Priya is one of the creative minds ensuring artwork and production set-ups are accurate and ready to go. With a background in graphic design and experience in printing companies, she brings both technical skill and an eye for detail to the team.

She loves the day-to-day interactions with her colleagues especially the banter that keeps the office atmosphere lively.

Our Stores team are the unsung heroes behind the scenes at Stocksigns. They make sure everything is where it needs to be from checking sign quality and preparing fixings, to organising deliveries and keeping production flowing smoothly. Without them, we simply couldn’t deliver the reliable service our customers depend on.

Life in Stores

Every day in Stores is varied and fast-paced. The team check the quality and clarity of signs, apply fixings, pick up pallets, pack freight, and ensure deliveries leave the building on time. They’re also quick to step in and support other areas of production when needed, keeping the whole operation running like clockwork.

Paul – Quality Checker & Problem-Solver

Paul’s role is all about attention to detail. He spends his days checking signs for quality and clarity, making sure everything is finished to the highest standard before it leaves the building.

Projects he’s proud of

Paul’s standout moment was helping to install hoarding for HS2  a project that went off without a hitch, with everything fitting perfectly on site.

Career journey

When the company he previously worked for closed, Stocksigns took on their work and their people. Paul moved from screen printing to installation, before eventually settling in Stores, where he’s become a vital part of the team.

Ian – Organised & Efficient

Ian thrives on keeping Stores organised and running smoothly. His days involve picking pallets, quality checking, packing freight, and making sure deliveries head out the door on time.

He takes pride in having an organised system in place and making sure everything works like a well-oiled machine.

Together, Paul and Ian keep our Stores department running smoothly, making sure every order leaves Stocksigns on time and to the highest standard. They’re a team that thrives on organisation, teamwork, and a bit of banter and we couldn’t do it without them.

Meet the Team: Digital Studio at Stocksigns

When it comes to producing high-quality signage, our Digital Studio is where the magic happens. This team takes customer ideas and turns them into finished products, making sure every print is sharp, accurate, and delivered on time.

Life in the Digital Studio

Every day starts with checking what needs to be prioritised whether that’s specials, standard orders, or urgent jobs. The team make sure everything is completed in date order, with a keen eye on deadlines to ensure customers get their goods exactly when they need them.

From large print runs to unique, one-off pieces, the Digital Studio crew balance efficiency with creativity and keep the production process running smoothly.

Colin – Digital Printing Specialist

Colin first joined Stocksigns back in 1989, when he was offered a job by Peter Sore in screen printing. He moved into digital printing in 2010 and has been a key part of the studio ever since.

Projects he’s proud of

Colin has plenty of standout moments, from producing 20,000 fire exit signs for Woolworths, to creating signage for the Ministry of Sound  including a giant crest for their 20th anniversary.

What he enjoys most

For Colin, it’s the camaraderie. He enjoys having a laugh with his colleagues – usually about football!

Dom – Detail-Driven & Customer-Focused

Dom plays a key role in keeping the Digital Studio running smoothly, making sure jobs are managed in order and completed to the highest standard. He’s the go-to for checking what needs to be prioritised and works closely with the team to balance deadlines with quality.

Projects he’s proud of

Dom takes pride in seeing a project through from start to finish, especially when it means delivering something unique for a customer. Whether it’s a special one-off or a large batch order, he ensures everything leaves the studio sharp, accurate, and on time. A job that particularly sticks out to Dom was a job he did where he created a war memorabilia  on blue foamex.

What he enjoys most

For Dom, it’s the mix of problem-solving and teamwork as well as being on the creative side when it comes to bespoke orders. He enjoys keeping production flowing and making sure customers are always happy with the result.

  • Dom has written a book and is a big reader normally reading around 100 books a year.

Neil – Multi-Talented All-Rounder

Neil has been part of Stocksigns since 1996, originally joining as a temp after a career in the building trade. Over the years, he’s worked in every production department from Stores to Screen Printing, before moving into Digital Printing in 2010.

Neil says one of his proudest achievements is simply being part of the company’s evolution seeing how production has developed over the years, especially the transition from traditional screen printing to digital.

Neil thrives on the daily fun and shenanigans in the studio, keeping the atmosphere light even when the workload is heavy.

Meet the Team: Fabrication at Stocksigns

Behind every sign we make at Stocksigns is a hardworking team making sure everything is cut, fabricated, and finished to perfection. Our Fabrication team is at the heart of that process – turning materials into quality products that meet the highest standards.

Life in Fabrication

A typical day for the team is varied and hands-on. From cutting materials in date order and fabricating parts, through to preparing state fixings for plating, they make sure every step is done with precision. They’re also responsible for offloading deliveries, storing stock safely, keeping materials logged, and ensuring nothing is ever missed.

On top of their day-to-day work, the team often supports our Messagemaker colleagues, lending their strength for heavy lifting jobs and trailer support. It’s a role that demands both skill and teamwork  and our Fabrication crew deliver it daily.

Meet Danny

Danny first came to Stocksigns after interviewing for a Stores role, but when a position opened in metalwork, he knew that was the right fit. The physical side of the job suited him, and he’s never looked back.

Projects he’s proud of

Danny has played a big part in railway projects and supermarket rebrands  including a Somerfield rollout. But what makes him proudest is getting the chance to work alongside his son Ewan on projects, creating a real family connection at work.

What he enjoys most

For Danny, it’s all about the communication and camaraderie. He loves sharing stories and working closely with his teammates – and says that the mental side of collaboration is just as rewarding as the physical work.

Meet John

John has been with Stocksigns for an incredible 40 years. He originally joined after spotting an ad in the newspaper for a silk screen printer role, but over time he moved into fabrication, becoming one of our most experienced team members and our go-to expert for health and safety.

Among John’s biggest achievements is setting up the vitreous enamel process from scratch – a complex and demanding task that he mastered with precision. He’s also proud of how his knowledge of health and safety has grown, making him our trusted source of expertise across the business.

What he enjoys most

John thrives on a challenge. Whether it’s tackling a tricky fabrication job or problem-solving with his colleague Danny, he enjoys the satisfaction of getting the job done as a team.

Say hello to Shaun – another of our fantastic Sales Account Managers here at Stocksigns! He’s dedicated to giving our customers the very best service, whether that’s turning around quotes quickly, finding the right solution, or making sure every order is spot on.

Shaun’s days are all about delivering top-notch personal service. From guiding new customers through their first orders to making sure long-term clients keep coming back, he takes pride in building strong relationships.

One project he’s especially proud of was his work with Sunotec UK. Although it wasn’t his biggest order, it was one of the most rewarding because it involved working with a brand-new customer. Shaun got to really showcase his product knowledge and provide advice to make sure they ended up with the best solution.

What makes his job exciting?

The variety.

“Every day is different,” Shaun says, “and I get to work with such a wide range of customers, each with their own challenges.”

Shaun’s path into sales started in hospitality at the prestigious Royal Automobile Club, before moving into sales-focused roles during and after university

A placement year in sales support at a car leasing company gave him his first real taste of the industry, and his final year at university included a stint at Curry’s where he picked up some early selling skills.

Since joining Stocksigns, Shaun says the biggest skill he’s developed is learning the art of selling. From persuasive techniques to guiding customers toward the best product, he’s discovered how much goes into building trust and closing a deal.

He also really values the people around him:

“I enjoy the social aspect of working here – being able to have different conversations with different people every day.”

Meet the Team: George, Graduate Sales Account Manager

Meet George – one of the newest faces in our Sales team at Stocksigns! Fresh from university, George joined us through our graduate scheme and is also gaining valuable experience as part of the Pareto apprenticeships programme. He’s already making his mark with customers and showing his competitive edge in the world of sales

Life at Stocksigns 

As a Sales Account Manager, George spends his days juggling emails, sending quotes, chatting with customers on the phone, and reaching out to new businesses. Organisation is key and he’s mastered the art of Post-it notes, call schedules, and colour-coded emails to keep on top of it all.

One of the projects he’s most proud of so far has been working with Greenfingers Charity, helping provide signage for hospice gardens. Being able to contribute to such a meaningful project has been a real highlight.

What keeps George engaged is the people – he loves building rapport with customers across the UK, from Exeter all the way up to Edinburgh. And, being naturally competitive, he admits it’s always exciting to check the sales board at the end of the day to see how he’s stacking up!

Career Journey 

After finishing university, George knew sales was the route he wanted to take – especially in B2B, which suited his skills and interests. Stocksigns was the perfect match, offering him the chance to learn, grow, and be part of a supportive team.

Since joining, George says his biggest takeaway so far has been organisation. From scheduling follow-up calls to categorising emails, he’s quickly learned that being organised makes everything far more manageable in a fast-paced environment.

The team spirit has also made a big impression:

“It is a true team at Stocksigns. Everyone is happy to help everyone. It’s been a real pleasure learning from so many people, in all of the different departments and I know I can continue to learn as I go.”

Meet the Team: Laura, Sales Account Manager at Stocksigns

Say hello to Laura- our brilliant Sales Account Manager here at Stocksigns! She’s the friendly voice at the end of the phone, the problem-solver for our customers, and someone who knows a thing or two about keeping projects running smoothly.

Life at Stocksigns

Laura spends her days looking after customer accounts, developing new business, and working with the wider team to make sure we’re always improving our offerings. No two days are ever the same for her. One moment she’s quoting and booking orders, the next she’s on a site visit or chatting with customers about upcoming projects.

One project she’s especially proud of is her contribution to wayfinding in high-rise buildings, rolled out after the Grenfell tragedy and changes in legislation. Knowing her work has helped make buildings safer is something that makes her job feel truly meaningful.

What keeps it exciting?

The variety.

Laura works with such a broad customer base that she’s always meeting people from new industries, keeping every day fresh and interesting.

Career Journey

Laura didn’t set out to work in sales  in fact, she started her career in PA and admin roles after college. But during lockdown she was thrown off her tracks, a referral brought her to Stocksigns, and it turned out to be the perfect fit. Her role calls on her social skills and her knack for organisation, and she’s embraced the challenge head-on.

Since joining, she says the biggest skill she’s developed is resilience. Sales can be a rollercoaster, but Laura’s learned to keep going and grafting, no matter the setbacks.

  • If money were no object, she’d love to be an antiques dealer. (She blames watching too much Only Fools and Horses for that one – but really, she just loves hunting down treasures in vintage shops and car boots!)
  • She’s got three bucket lists on the go:
    1. People to see live – and yes, she has tickets to see Oasis in September!
    2. City breaks – because what better way to see the world while working full time?
    3. UK pubs – which she rates based on the quality of their Guinness. (Now that’s dedication to research).

 A Marathon and a Mountain – Conquering Mount Perdido

This year, the Stocksigns and Messagemaker Displays team and friends, set their sights on an incredible challenge climbing the legendary “The Lost Mountain,” better known as Mount Perdido. Standing at an impressive 11,000 ft in the Pyrenees, this was no small adventure!

Climbing for a Cause

This year’s climb was again in aid of The Children’s Trust, Stocksigns and Messagemaker Displays’ nominated charity partner. The UK charity provides vital rehabilitation, care, education, and therapy for children with brain injury or neurodisability.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, we are proud to announce that together we raised £26,653.57 for this fantastic cause. This will go a long way in supporting the Trust’s life-changing work.

Day One – The Journey Begins

Friday 4th July

Our challenge began in the early hours, meeting at Gatwick Airport at 4:00am. Some of us were seasoned adventurers, others brand new to the team – but all ready for the mountain ahead. After checking in and making it through security, a hearty Wetherspoons breakfast was the perfect way to fuel up before boarding our flight to Barcelona.

From there, we picked up three trusty minibuses and began our long drive towards Torla-Ordesa. A quick lunch stop split the group between tapas and fast food before we continued our winding journey through the Pyrenees. That evening, we settled into our hostel, enjoyed a team beer, and received our Lost Mountain T-shirts, crampons, and a briefing from our leader, Captain Cload.

Day Two – Into the Ordesa Valley

Saturday 5th July

An early breakfast set us up for our first trek into the stunning Ordesa Valley. Towering cliffs, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls surrounded us as we made our way through this breathtaking landscape. A lunch stops by a waterfall gave some the chance to dip their toes in the icy water, while others stretched and recharged for the climb ahead.

The afternoon brought one of the most challenging parts of the trek – a steep, rocky ascent towards our overnight refuge. The notorious vereda de las flores section had us clinging to chains and steel poles on a cliff face, testing both nerve and balance.

Reaching the refuge was a moment of relief and celebration – hiking boots off, crocs on, and a well-earned pint of Estrella in hand. With no Wi-Fi, a few used the payphone to check in with loved ones before we settled in for an early night.

Day Three – The Summit Attempt

Sunday 6th July

We woke at 5:00am, ready for what we’d all been waiting for the summit push. Initially,

conditions had looked too dangerous to attempt, but the weather had turned in our favour. At 6:00am we began the climb, layering up as the wind and cold intensified.

At 3,000m, by a frozen lake, Captain Cload gave us a choice: turn back or push on. For some, the decision was to enjoy a slower descent and soak up the scenery. For others – ten of us in total – the call to summit was irresistible.

Using crampons for the icier stretches, we powered on to the very top. The view from the summit was nothing short of spectacular jagged peaks, endless skies, and the overwhelming satisfaction of standing on the roof of the Pyrenees.

After regrouping at the refuge for lunch, we began the long descent back to the minibuses and our base in Torla-Ordesa. That evening, showers, warm clothes, and a celebratory drink marked the perfect end to an unforgettable journey.

Stocksigns New Modern Slavery Signage Leads the Way in Construction

In the UK construction industry, where projects are fast-paced, workforces are transient, and supply chains are complex, a silent crisis often goes unnoticed: modern slavery.

That’s why Stocksigns is proud to launch a new range of Modern Slavery Awareness Signs, specially designed for construction sites. These signs are more than just words on a wall they’re a frontline tool to help spot and stop exploitation.

What Is Modern Slavery, and Why Should Construction Care?

Modern slavery includes forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation. It’s estimated that over 122,000 people are trapped in modern slavery in the UK, many in industries like construction where informal recruitment, language barriers, and subcontracting make abuse easier to hide.

Shockingly, labour exploitation in construction is on the rise. In 2022, the UK Modern Slavery Helpline saw a 53% increase in construction-related reports. That’s why awareness and early detection are key and signage can help.

Think of modern slavery warning signs like fire safety signs: they don’t solve the problem alone, but they alert, educate, and empower people to act.

According to the Stronger Together Toolkit for Tackling Modern Slavery in Construction, construction sites are especially high-risk due to:

  • Use of agency and migrant labour
  • Low oversight over subcontractors
  • False credentials and unlicensed recruitment practices
  • Workers living in overcrowded, unsafe housing, often provided by exploiters

The Toolkit recommends raising awareness among all staff and making it easy to report concerns. That’s exactly what these new signs do.

The Lucy Rayner Foundation: A Commitment to Mental Health

The Lucy Rayner Foundation is a UK-based charity that supports individuals affected by mental health issues, with a particular focus on young people. It was founded in memory of Lucy Rayner, who tragically took her own life in 2012 after struggling with mental health challenges. The foundation’s mission is to raise awareness, provide resources, and offer support to help prevent suicide and improve mental health outcomes for those in need.

Why Mental Health Awareness in Construction Matters?

The construction industry is vulnerable to mental health challenges. Workers often deal with high-stress levels, physical exhaustion, and a lack of job security.

It’s estimated that 14,000 workers in the UK construction industry suffer from anxiety, work-related stress, or depression (HSE)—whether that’s a new issue or something that’s been long-standing. When we look at the statistics, the numbers are staggering:

  • 0.7% of workers in the sector suffer from work-related stress, depression, or anxiety (new or long-standing). (HSE)
  • Construction workers are four times more likely to take their own life, with around 7,000 deaths linked to mental illness. (LBC)
  • 1.5 million UK construction workers are at risk of poor mental health. (Professional Builders)
  • In 2020, construction workers were at some of the highest risk of suicide in the country, with rates 3.7 times higher than the national average. (Mates In Mind)

Here at Stocksigns, we value giving back to the community. Every year, the team participates in volunteering and fundraising events. For the past four years, we’ve been raising money and volunteering for The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with injuries.

Based in Tadworth, the Trust provides rehabilitation and a range of specialist care, education, and therapy for children and young people to make the best recovery after a serious illness or accident.
Now, we are donating 5% of all online orders to The Children’s Trust, so keep reading to see how those donations go to an amazing cause:

What do we do?

Our Annual Charity Climb:

Each year, the Stocksigns team embarks on an exciting mountaineering challenge alongside our customers and suppliers to raise money for charity. Our charity climbs for the Children’s Trust started in 2021 and walked the Jurassic Coast. Over two days the team hiked 50 miles and climbed a total of 9,000ft. To add to the challenge the team also camped, they woke up both mornings to heavy rain.

In 2024, we took on a climb that was a whole other level, ascending to the highest mountain in Greece. Mount Olympus is a 9,500ft peak in Greece, known as ‘The Home of the Gods. Last year, we raised an incredible £17,036 for The Children’s Trust.

Our Quarterly Volunteering:

We also volunteer in Quarterly gardening at the Children’s Trust Headquarters in Tadworth.

The grounds at the Children’s Trust play an important role in providing spaces for children and their families, to relax and reflect.

The gardens offer a space for fresh air, play, and sensory development and are a vital part of The Children’s Trust’s life. The 24 acres of woodland and gardens can become difficult to maintain, that’s where we come in.

The Stocksigns team isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty and help by clearing out weeds on the grounds.

We had a visit from Yasmeen, whose daughter Shakeerah was diagnosed with a tumour at the age of 1, followed by 2 isolated years in the hospital. The difficult journey led them to The Children’s Trust which got Shakeerah walking again

They gave Shakeerah a childhood again. Shakeerah, the staff, and her parents are true inspirations and just one of the many families whose lives get put back on track thanks to the incredible charity

What did we do in 2024?

As we look into the festive season and approach the end of 2024, we thought we’d take a moment to reflect on this year, and a roller coaster of a year we’ve had! From upgrading our machinery to climbing Mt Olympus. 2024 has been quite the year for Stocksigns! Let’s look back on the year with us!

Since upgrading our printer to the Impala 4 last year, we have continued to replace our old equipment with new, more energy-efficient models. In March 204 we replaced our existing cutter with the Zund Cutter installed into our Digital Studio. In July we upgraded our HP 800 Latex Printer. A High-quality roll feed printer capable of printing 100 metres of high-quality imagery.

It’s not just our digital design studio that has benefited from new shiny machinery, we have been installing more energy-efficient technologies throughout our business, reducing energy costs whilst maintaining, if not improving, both our quality and output. This year our energy usage for Quarter 1 2024 had dropped around 40% in comparison to Quarter 1 2023.

Sustainability sits at the heart of everything that we do! Every progressive step must be a step towards lowering our carbon footprint and making a positive impact on the environment. Upgrading our equipment is helping us get one step closer to our goal of becoming Net Zero by 2030!

By far our biggest challenge this year was climbing a 9500ft mountain for our charity partner The Children’s Trust. At the end of June Stocksigns and some of our friends climbed Mt Olympus otherwise known as ‘The Home of Gods’ in Greece!

This was a 2-day trek where the team headed to the summit and back down again. The team stayed overnight at 8,800ft in a mountain hut and took on the summit on day 2.

The final ascent to the summit is was where it got really tricky, we had to use harnesses and helmets to take on the Class III YSD graded ascent to the top.

Every Year the Trust supports thousands of children and their families across the UK, providing rehabilitation as well as a range of specialist care, education, and therapy for children and young people to make the best recovery after a serious illness or accident.

We are so pleased and proud to share with you that our climb up Olympus has raised over £17,000. Thank you all that donating!

So we’ve been busy! This year has been an adventure, focused on innovation and progression. We wonder what next year will bring? We can’t wait to share our journey with you next year.

This forms a key pillar of the Stocksigns progressive CSR policy, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable business practices and helping to reduce the environmental impact of signage manufacturing.

 

Launched in 2012, the Supply Chain Sustainability School is a learning platform that aims to upskill those working within the built environment sector, offering training and resources shaped by industry Partners and sector needs.

Stocksigns has been providing high-quality signage to the construction, facilities management, rail and manufacturing sectors since 1955. Many of our company’s key customers within these sectors are currently working towards their own sustainability goals and are beginning to look to their supply chains for further carbon emission reductions.

As such, we recognised that gaining additional knowledge and insight is imperative in aligning our own sustainability journey with that of our customers.  So naturally, we signed up as members of the school.

While it is certainly beneficial to make operational and procedural changes that reduce carbon emissions, the real key factor in creating effective change comes from members of staff within your business.

 

By utilising the resources available on the School’s website, we were able to develop a comprehensive training plan for our internal teams. These online resources were invaluable in conducting  various training sessions, including an Overview of ESG/CSR, Sustainability as a Sales Tool, Social Value training, and The Challenges of Sustainable Construction.

As a result of this training, the staff here at Stocksigns Ltd are now more engaged with the company’s sustainability and social value initiatives.

Charity Fundraising and Volunteering

This year the Stocksigns Team and friends at D2D Associates Limited, Tenzing Search, Seymour Civil Engineering and Clearview Intelligence climbed ‘The Home of the Gods’ Mt. Olympus! A massive 9500ft mountain in Greece for a The Children’s Trust!

Let’s hear from Dave Cload, The Captain of our climb! Who tells us what happened as the team climbed to the top? 

Friday 21st June

We started our Greek Odyssey on a dark Friday morning in our car park at Stocksigns. For some, a meeting time of 4.15 am was as much of a challenge as climbing a huge mountain! We met a few new faces (and a few old ones) and got all our kit together ready to start our journey.

Security & airport checks completed we all grabbed some well-needed breakfast and headed to the gate for departure. We managed a quick group photo in our gate room before boarding the plane.

After all passengers were boarded we were advised of a technical issue with the aircrafts back up radio system. Without it functioning, we were going nowhere.

After an hour we were given an update and advised that a technician was on board and trying to remedy the situation.

Another hour along and we were advised that the plane was not fixable and that they would have to perform (in their technical jargon) what they call ‘a plane change’.

Luckily we grasped the concept and within half an hour we sat on another plane waiting for the luggage to be loaded. 3 hours late, but still taking off!

We landed 3.5 hours later in Thessaloniki, collected three minivans, and drove just over an hour to the seaside town of Olympic Beach, nestled in the shadow of the mighty Mt Olympus.

We had enough time to grab some dinner, breakfast supplies for the next day and get our kit ready for the off. The next day we were climbing the might Mt Olympus, steeped in myth and legend.

Saturday 22nd June

Another early start and with some trepidation, we tucked into a continental breakfast ready for the off.

Another early start and with some trepidation, we tucked into a continental breakfast ready for the off. We donned our boots and our branded charity shirts, then set off to the mountain. On route we had to make a quick detour to mountaineering guides who would help us on the final ascent to the summit. We collected harnesses and helmets, signed some disclaimers, then set off to the start point.

When organising an ascent of the highest mountain in Greece, we didn’t really think about the possibility of a heatwave. At sea level it was 37c. I don’t think anyone would have made it if we had started there. Luckily, the mountain is so high that the trek’s start point is 1130m above sea level (3710ft).

It was still a very, very tough start. There was no air movement in the lush green forest that rings Olympus. We immediately started to drip with sweat!

We plodded on for around three hours, stopping very regularly for water breaks. For this first stretch we were all quite quiet, just trying to keep going through the beautiful woodland. We stopped for 45 minutes at a mountain refuge and fuelled up and took on supplies before heading to the second part of the day hike.

At this point we had climbed 815m in elevation, comparable to the size of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Ahead of us was a much longer stint taking us up to 2600m.

The paths started getting narrower and would go up as well as down in sections. The higher we went, the better the views got.

We finished day one by following a spine of Olympus up along to the Muses Plateau, home to some 150 Balkan chamois goat-antelope and many climbers. The plateau is a huge grass tundra under the gaze of the mountain Summi, which is called Mýtikas (translates to ‘the nose’).

Sunday 23rd June

We had a beautiful sunrise over the Aegean Sea that illuminated the summit with an orange glow.

We donned our climbing harnesses and helmets and made the hour-long hike round a huge depression, directly under the summit.

After much slipping and sliding on loose scree we made it to the start of the summit ascent, a near vertical gulley with plentiful ledges hand holds it was very steep, but not technically a climb. In fact it is classified as a YDS Class 3 grade scramble, in sections if you fall the chances of survival is minimal.

Luckily this is where our team of professional mountain guides came in. We were belayed up in groups of 4, so although it looked very dangerous, it was about as safe as we could possibly make it.

The scramble took around an hour as we made it to the very summit of Mt Olympus, a mighty 2,917m, or 9,572ft high. The views were amazing, we had a 360 panoramic view around the mountain. On one side the mountain sloped off into the Aegean Sea, on the other huge vertical drops that looked out over mainland Greece.

We had made it to the Home of the Gods! After precariously making our way back down the gulley, we circled back to the overnight refuge, collected our belongings and started the epic walk back. The last hour was absolute agony.  Everything Hurt! Everyone was in a massive state of relief when the vans and the starting point came into view.

Later that evening, once showered and changed it finally felt real. We’d climbed Olympus

This charity for this years climb is The Children’s Trust. Every Year the Trust support thousands of children and their families across the UK. Based in Tadworth, the Trust provides rehabilitation as well as a range of specialist care, education and therapy for children and young people to make the best recovery after a serious illness or accident.

We are so proud to share that we raise £17,488.00 for The Children’s Trust.

It might be difficult to understand industrial signage because there are so many variations in how it is used and applied. However, it is the underappreciated hero of modern industries.

But do not be alarmed; we have pulled together a comprehensive guide aimed at professionals, business owners, and enthusiasts who want to understand industrial signage thoroughly. Why Industrial Signage Matters?

Investing in Industrial Signage is a proactive way to create a safer work environment helping to reduce accidents in the workplace. Safety:

The most frequent accidents involve slips, trips, or falls according to RIDDOR 2022/23, 60,645 employees reported a non-fatal injury. The current rate of self-reported non-fatal injuries is similar to pre-pandemic levels, with 1,750 injuries per 100,000 workers, indicating a general downward trend.

Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996:

The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 mandate that safety signs must be installed and maintained in workplaces where they can reduce risk, following a thorough risk assessment. It’s important to recognise that while these signs are essential for warning of risks and thus reducing them, they are not a substitute for actual risk control measures.

Additionally, signage must align with the BE EN ISO 7010 standard, which specifies the colours and icons to be used. This standardisation ensures that signage maintains a consistent design, making it easily understood in any application. However, the regulations do permit small differences in pictograms, provided these variations do not affect clarity or cause confusion. Compliance with these standards ensures a safer and more comprehensible environment for all employees.

Efficiency

Accidents in the workplace are not only a safety concern but also a significant time waster. In Britain during 2022/23, approximately 2 million working days were lost due to ill health or non-fatal workplace injuries. On average, each affected person took about 15.8 days off. Specifically, 6 days were taken off due to injuries, another 6 days due to stress or mental health issues, 9 days due to musculoskeletal disorders, and 8 days due to various other health issues. Notably, the current rate of days lost is higher than it was before the pandemic. Implementing effective wayfinding in large workplaces can help reduce these numbers by avoiding confusion, ensuring proper use of PPE, and providing clear instructions for machinery use, thereby minimizing delays and enhancing overall safety and efficiency.

Types of Industrial Signage

There are different types of industrial signage, the most common types of industrial signage, include safety signage, emergency signage, and informational signage which are always found around your site or workplace.

Safety Signage

Safety Signage:

Safety signage notifies people of possible dangers such as chemical storage facilities, high-voltage places, and slippery floors. These areas or situations are often there to identify low-risk places of circumstance that require prudence as well as declaring danger that could cause serious harm or even death. These signs are typically red and white.

Signage 101-Infomational

Informational Signage:

Informational signage indicates what must be done, such as putting on a safety harness or protective equipment (PPE). It specifies any behaviours that are forbidden such as entering or smoking. It provides specific information about the facility, such as operating instructions, operational hours, and emergency contact details.

Signage 101- Emergency

Emergency Signs:

Emergency signs are there to enable quick action in the event of a fire, including signs for fire exits, extinguishers, and fire alarms. They mark the location of first aid stations and emergency medical equipment and display escape routes and assembly points for evacuation.

Regulation Standards

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has established statutory requirements that industrial signs in the UK must follow including:

  • Must communicate clear safety-related information and risk.
  • How the signs are used of safety signs and signals in public and workplace settings.

This outlines the Health and Safety Regulations of 1966.

The 2002 Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations are laws demanding that hazardous materials are to be handled and stored safely. These regulations mandate the installation of suitable signage to alert workers of the potential risk that is associated with these materials.

British Norms (BN) are to guarantee consistency, efficiency, and compliance with safety and quality standards. This includes several standard guidelines that provide recommendations and requirements for various aspects of industrial signage.

It might feel as though the words ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’ get used synonymously and are often confused. But in fact, they both have very different meanings and both have their impact on health and safety in the workplace. Here we explain the difference between them so you can safely manage all the hazards and risks in your workplace.

While they don’t mean the same thing, they are very closely related and you can’t have one without the other. Without a hazard, there is no risk. But they are different, and understanding the differences is an important part of risk assessment. So let’s look at what makes hazards and risks different.

So what’s the difference between a hazard and a risk?

What is a Hazard?

A hazard is something that does not directly cause harm but has the potential to cause harm or loss. A hazard generally increases the effect of danger and has the potential to cause an accident. This could be in the form of a  a substance, machinery, activity, method of work, or process. Hazards are found in nearly every workplace, home, and environment.

How to identify a hazard?

  • Collect existing information about workplace hazards.
  • Inspect the workplace for safety and health hazards.
  • Inspect and identify health-related hazards.
  • Conduct incident investigations to identify the hazard.
  • Identify hazards associated with emergency situations.

What is a Hazard in the Workplace?

Depending on your workplace, these could include;

  • Biological – Viruses, bacteria, insects, animals, etc., that can cause harm. For example; mould, dust, blood, other bodily fluids, vermin, and other parasites.
  • Chemical – Will depend on the properties of the chemicals used and how they are stored on the premises. It includes both health and physical hazards, such as skin irritation, carcinogenicity, flammability, and radiation.
  • Ergonomic – Physical factors that can lead to musculoskeletal injuries. For example: lighting, equipment layout, manual handling process and workstation layout.
  • Physical – Environmental factors that can cause harm when anyone comes into contact with. This includes heights, vibration, radiation, and pressure.
  • Psychosocial – This is an occupational hazards which can have an adverse effect on an individual’s mental health or well-being. This includes hazards such as stress, bullying, and workplace violence.

The statistics of workplace accidents and dangers are shocking! The Health and Safety Executive reports that 1.6 million working people are suffering from a work-related illness or injury.

What is a risk?

A risk is a chance that somebody could be harmed by the hazard. A risk calculates how likely it is that someone will be hurt, and how severe an injury would be. A risk will be given a rating, for example, high, medium or low taking into account these two factors; the possible severity of injury and the likelihood of the harm occurring.

Risk is the probability of harm that hazards could cause if not checked and precautions put in place. In the case of a person, it is the possibility of them being injured or receiving an adverse health effect due to the hazards.

The severity of harm could range from minor short-term harm to major life-changing injuries or death. The likelihood of harm occurring from the hazard could range from very unlikely to highly likely.

As an employer, it’s your responsibility to determine the hazards, measure the risks and install controls to protect your workforce.

When you consider the degree of risk that a hazard poses to your employees or yourself, you must bear in mind the following factors that can influence risk:

  • The frequency of exposure.
  • The route of exposure.
  • How severe the injury or adverse health effect of exposure is.

The risk is the chances of quantifiable loss, damage, injury, liability, or any other negative outcome resulting from internal or external hazards. Through some preventable action, you can minimise risk. To minimise the risk, you need to know the types of risks and what events can cause them.

What is a risk in the workplace?

A risk in a workplace could include.

Slips and Trips

This could be spillages making the floors wet, poorly fitted floors loose tiles, poorly fitted carpets that could have the potential to trip you up, or even loose cables from computers.

Working at Height

One of the biggest causes of workplace fatalities. Must check ground conditions, and see if the surfaces are fragile. Make sure the job has been properly planned.

 Could be caused by a slip or a trip from poorly fitting floors or even a wet floor. Bad-fitting shoes can contribute to your risk of a sprain.

The Key differences between risks and hazards.

Hazard identifies a source that can cause harm, danger, or loss, whereas a risk describes the probability of harm occurring as a result of that identified hazard. Hazards are related to physical objects, situations, or settings that can cause harm or damage. A risk relates to an action that is a result of a hazard.

Conclusion

So you should now know what a hazard is (something with the potential to cause harm) and what risk is (the chance that somebody could be harmed by the hazard).

Activities may have many hazards, but the level of risk can be reduced by good management and controls. Where you can eliminate hazards, you can remove the risk.

It is impossible, and you are not expected to eliminate all the risks in your workplace, but putting in place safety procedures, improving the work environment and staying on top of hazard and risks will help maintain a safe and secure workplace.
